Dr. Filipe Coutinho is a Medical Oncologist at the Medio Ave Local Health Unit (Portugal), where his clinical practice focuses on gastrointestinal (gastric and colorectal) and breast cancers, alongside palliative care within the in-hospital palliative care team. He graduated from the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Beira Interior, where he is an Invited Professor, co-coordinates the Clinical Oncology Module, and teaches general and geriatric oncology.
He is the founder and coordinator of the Geriatric Oncology Working Group of the Portuguese Society of Oncology, leading national initiatives in education, research, and multidisciplinary collaboration in geriatric oncology. He serves as Portugal’s National Representative to SIOG, was awarded SIOG National Representative of the Year (2023), and is a member of the Young SIOG Governance (2024–2026).
Dr. Coutinho serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Geriatric Oncology and works closely with national and international partners to advance education and supportive care for older adults with cancer. He is also a member of the Multidisciplinary Scientific Council of the Portuguese Society of Gerontology and Geriatrics, and member of the Cancer and Aging Research Group (CARG). His main interests include treatment management in older adults with gastrointestinal malignancies, particularly gastric cancer, the development of structured geriatric oncology education for healthcare professionals, and the integrated interface between oncology, geriatrics, and palliative care.
