SIOG Methods Working Group

2025-06-24T13:06:12+02:00

The SIOG Methods Working Group aims to generate and share educational content covering the full spectrum of research methods—from formulating research questions to interpreting study results—to enhance the quality and rigor of both quantitative and qualitative observational studies in geriatric oncology. The two main activities of the working group are: Collaborating on and publishing methodological papers for the geriatric oncology community, with the goal of raising awareness of common biases in observational research and offering practical solutions; and Organizing educational events featuring internal (SIOG) or external experts to support methodological training and knowledge exchange. Designing observational studies to estimate treatment effects in geriatric oncology: A closer look at confounding and its mitigation Chairs Jennifer L. SIOG Designation Centers for Geriatric Oncology Working Group

2024-09-27T17:09:09+02:00

Multiple studies demonstrate the benefits of timely integration of Geriatric Oncology (GO) with routine oncologic care. This growing body of evidence increases support for the integration of GO and oncology from multiple professional organizations, despite complex barriers to implement this essential service. The suggested 'SIOG Designated Centers of Integrated Oncology and Geriatric Oncology' are aimed to become self-nominating cancer centers by following a rigorous anonymous review process by members of the SIOG. This process will result in consistency with established international standards. Co-Chairs Ravindran Kanesvaran, Singapore Yakir Rottenberg, Israel Beatriz Korc-Grodzicki, US Members Nicolò Matteo Luca Battisti, UK Andrew Chapman, US Grant Williams, US

GerOnTe

2023-10-10T14:42:08+02:00

Population is aging and the number of complex multimorbid patients to manage will increase sharply. Disease centred approach is not appropriate to manage these patients. Change to a patient-centred approach will simplify care pathways, secure management and treatment decision making and decrease healthcare costs. It will be a real breakthrough for daily practice with multiple impacts that must be quantified. GerOnTe multimorbid patient-centred system proposes: 1) Coordination of management by a patient-tailored, interdisciplinary health professional consortium (HPC), including hospital- and home-based professionals, with a case manager; 2) Timely registration of symptoms and patient-reported outcomes at home through a web-based app for anticipation of avoidable adverse events; 3) Proposal of self-management guidelines according to intrinsic capacity evaluation by geriatrician for patient-driven improvement of independent living; 4) Structured collection of data from electronic health record into a dashboard made available to HPC members as well as patient and [...]

COVID-19 and older patients with cancer

2023-03-16T12:22:39+01:00

COVID-19 is affecting the whole world, but older persons with cancer are among the highest risk groups for suffering more than others. Both older persons and patients with cancer are at increased risk of obtaining COVID-19 and dying from it, and the 2 risk factors add on. Moreover, older persons with cancer are at highest risk of being excluded from intensive care support for COVID-19 infection and/or adequate cancer treatment if resources are limited. SIOG therefore wants to make some concrete statements and practical recommendations for all health care workers dealing with older persons with cancer. It should be clearly acknowledged that these are empirical considerations, not based on solid science, which doesn’t exist yet unfortunately. More than ever, for every individual patient, physicians should search strategies to avoid undertreatment of the cancer while also avoiding overtreatment and useless hospital visits where patients potentially come in contact with the [...]

LifeChamps

2025-04-03T21:13:21+02:00

LifeChamps is an EU H2020 Research & Innovation Programme. It aims at shifting the discrimination barrier for older cancer patients and improving their QoL after treatment through the integration of different clinical and digital tools such as PROMs, PREMs, symptomatic and geriatric measures, mHealth and wearables, machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithms for Big Data. LifeChamps is currently developing a novel, sophisticated, and multifaceted clinical decision support tool for a comprehensive geriatric assessment. By doing so, LifeChamps aims at including geriatric cancer patients as active members of the integrated care model since care team coordination is feasible through the combination of cancer symptom self-report and frailty modelling. Additionally, LifeChamps aims to expand the current base of knowledge for the healthcare support of older people with cancer and create a digital intervention reflecting the suggested best practices in geriatric oncology.
