SPARC (SIOG Patient Advocacy Resources and Communities) is a SIOG initiative dedicated to addressing the needs of older cancer patients. We unite patient advocates, healthcare providers, researchers, policymakers, and industry experts to drive dialogue and actionable outcomes in geriatric oncology.
As the aging population grows, older adults face significant disparities in cancer care. SIOG champions improved patient care and tailored treatments, addressing the physiological and social aspects of aging. Our goal is to ensure older patients receive dignified, respectful, and comprehensive care, integrating their voices into care and policy decisions to enhance outcomes and quality of life.

The SPARC Roundtable
Our annual SPARC Roundtable gathers stakeholders to discuss and address key topics, including:
- Innovative Treatments – Explore new treatment approaches for older adults.
- Age-Related Biases – Address biases that affect care quality and ensure treatment decisions reflect individual health and preferences.
- Complex Health Needs – Advocate for comprehensive care considering comorbidities and interactions with existing treatments.
- Clinical Trial Inclusion – Promote inclusive research to improve data on cancer treatments for older populations.
- Communication – Bridge gaps between older patients and healthcare providers for better understanding and informed decision-making.
- Quality of Life – Focus on aligning treatments with patients’ life goals, including pain management and psychosocial support.
- Social and Financial Support – Address challenges like social isolation, transportation, and treatment costs.
- Policy Influence – Advocate for policies that better meet the needs of older cancer patients, including healthcare systems and insurance coverage.
