Hear from Our 2025 Alumni

“Since completing the Masterclass, I have joined GERICO, the French National Cancer Institute’s research group in geriatric oncology. This step has broadened my research activity and connected me with an international network working at the intersection of oncology, ageing, and clinical innovation.

The Masterclass played a meaningful role in this progression: it strengthened my understanding of the logistical, technical, and administrative aspects of building research projects, and it sharpened my critical thinking while expanding my creativity in generating new research ideas.

“Since completing the Research Masterclass in 2025, I have further developed the research idea I presented and worked on during the program, incorporating the constructive feedback I received to strengthen the study design and methodological approach. This work ultimately resulted in a full research proposal that I have submitted for funding.

Dr. Enrique Soto, one of the Research Masterclass mentors, has continued to serve as my geriatric oncology mentor since then, providing ongoing guidance on manuscripts, study design, and career development activities.

The Research Masterclass was instrumental in accelerating this progress by offering structured, high-quality feedback, exposure to new research methodologies, and valuable opportunities to learn from colleagues across the field.

The networking during the Research Masterclass was especially impactful, as it broadened my collaborations and strengthened my engagement with the geriatric oncology research community.”

“During the SIOG Research Masterclass in Paris, I presented a clinical research project on treatment de-escalation in older patients with lung cancer (REDUCE-Lung trial).

Beyond the comprehensive training in clinical research in geriatric oncology, the Masterclass helped me refine my research question, better define the target population, and strengthen the integration of frailty assessment into the study design.

Since completing the Masterclass, the project has significantly progressed and is currently under regulatory submission, with patient inclusion planned to start this year.

Overall, this was an extremely enriching experience, both for the development of this project and for my long-term academic career in geriatric oncology.”

Since I completed the masterclass, my research project has evolved somewhat and has mainly shifted toward discussions around funding.

Unfortunately, the cost of the treatment must be included in the trial costs, as it is outside the scope of marketing authorization, which makes the expenses excessively high and renders the project difficult to fund in its current form.

Following the advice of Prof. Dr. Martine Extermann in particular, as well as Prof. Dr. Etienne Brain, I am therefore going back to basics, building on the current experience a new small cohort.

As a separate point regarding my professional development, since completing the masterclass—and thanks to it—I have taken on the role of Vice-President of the GERICO-DIALOG Group, a French research organization in geriatric oncology with a particular focus on de-escalation strategies.”
