Biographical Info
Osman İlhan graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of Ankara University in 1978. Being Internal Medicine Specialist at the same faculty in 1982, Osman İlhan, M.D., played a significant role in the establishment of Hematology – Oncology clinic pursuant to a decision of Higher Education Board. Having completed his military service at Gülhane Military Medical Academy in the period of 1984-85 and his compulsory service in the Social Security Institution between 1985 and 1988, Osman İlhan returned to the Faculty of Medicine of Ankara University in 1988 and started to study in Hematology for his subspecialty education. He assumed the titles of Assist. Prof. Dr. and Assoc. Prof. Dr. in Hematology in 1990 and 1991, respectively. He worked in Genova, Italy to increase his knowledge and manner about leukemia. He was a member of the Governing Board of the Faculty of Medicine of Ankara University between 1993 and 1996. He took part in the team performing the first Autologous and Allogeneic Peripheral Stem Cell Transplantation in Turkey. Having studied on the development of high dose treatment principles, İlhan, M.D., established the first Apheresis Unit of Turkey in 1994. He went to the USA in 1996 and studied on Stabilization, Cryopreservation and Transplantation of Stem Cells with Prof. Dr. Martin Korbling and Prof. Dr. Richard Champlin. After returning to Turkey, he established the modern Therapeutic Apheresis Unit and took charge in the structuring of the Stem Cell Transplantation Unit. Dr. İlhan assumed the title of Professor of Hematology in 1996. In 1997, he established the Apheresis Committee within the Turkish Society of Hematology. Selected as the Founding President of the Turkish Hemapheresis Society in 2000, İlhan, M.D., took part in the administrative staff of the World Apheresis Association (WAA) in 2001. In the same year, he also took office as the President of the Turkish Society of Hematology, which he quitted in 2005 after two subsequent terms of office. He undertook many different tasks in the Bone Marrow Transplantation Foundation, where he still acts as the chairman. Taking an active role in the European Hematology Association (EHA), İlhan, M.D., served as the board member of the European Committee in Accreditation of Hematology (ECAH) in relation to the training. Taking part in the accreditation of congresses and courses held in Turkey as Provider Status, he paved the way for the Turkish Hematologists in CME rating. Being an inspector of JACIE (Joint Accreditation Committee ISCT – EBMT), Osman İlhan, M.D., also became its representative in Turkey. A member of MDS Foundation, Dr. İlhan made the centre where he works one of the centres of excellence of the world. He broke the grounds by organising the 30th World Congress of the International Society of Hematology in İstanbul and 15th Congress of the European Society for Hemapheresis in Antalya throughout 2005 under his chairmanship. Playing a crucial role in the establishment of the Balkan Hematology Association, Osman İlhan acted as the Honorary President of the First Balkan Hematology Days held in Antalya in 2006. In the Department of Hematology of the Faculty of Medicine of Ankara University during the period of 2003 – 2006, he worked hard to make the clinic consistent with the international standards. He took part in the Turkish Society of Cellular Therapy and Regenerative Medicine as founding member in 2008. In March 2009, he chaired the 1st National Congress of Cellular Therapy accredited by EHA-CME. In February 2010, he organized the First National Symposium of Mesenchymal Stem Cells. In February 2011, he chaired the 2ndNational Congress of Cellular Therapy.He was the Honorary President of the World Apheresis Congress held in Turkey in 2012. He has been the Vice President of World Apheresis Association on 2012 and Honorary President of Experimental Hematology Association on 2013.He is the founding chairmon of Geriatric Hematology foundation since 2011. Previously taking part in the drug registration and ethics boards within the Ministry of Health, Osman İlhan currently acts as the chairman of “Photopheresis – Apheresis Commission, Bone Marrow Transplantation Scientific Committee, National Organ- Tissue- Cell Coordination Committee, Cord Blood Scientific Committee as well as the Stem Cell Research Committee. He contributed Turkey to become international with Bone Marrow and Steam Cell. Having more than 100 publications in the journals registered in Pub – Med, Osman İlhan has more than 1050 EHA – CME credits. The articles of İlhan, M.D., have been used for reference for more than 1000 times. He is a member of the editorial boards of Transfusion and Science and Therapeutic Apheresis Journals. He is a member of numerous associations including ASH, EHA, ASFH, ISH, ISFA, ISCT, EBMT, ASBMT and IBMTR. Every year, In behalf of Prof. Dr. Osman İlhan who had “Life – Long Service Award” from Society of Heamopheresis, “Prof. Dr. Osman İlhan Heamopheresis Award” is giving to researchers since 2009, by Society of Heamopheresis.
