Biographical Info
Dr. Janice Tsang is a Specialist in Medical Oncology and the immediate past Assistant Dean (Alumni Affairs) at the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong. Janice is currently the Hon. Clinical Assistant Professor at the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong. Her research interests lie mainly in Breast Oncology, Geriatric Oncology, Translational Research and Psycho-Oncology. Being the first female academic medical oncologist at The University of Hong Kong, Dr. Tsang was awarded the 2014 Hong Kong Ten Outstanding Young Persons Award, and the 2012 Hong Kong City Lady Award (Professional & Academic Category) as the only medical professional receiving this award for the year. She was also the winner of the Psychosocial Oncology Young Investigator Award at the 16th Hong Kong International Cancer Congress & 6th Annual Meeting of Centre for Cancer Research in 2009 and was bestowed the Faculty Teaching Medal in 2012, and the Outstanding Teaching Award (Team Award) for Medical Humanities in 2013 in recognition of her being one of the pioneers in incorporating Medical Humanities in the formal medical curriculum. She has conducted over 80 clinical trials including local, regional and international multi-centred clinical trials, and has been serving as Chairperson for Data Monitoring Committee, Steering Committee Members for major multi-centred clinical trials, and various International and Regional Advisory Boards. She is a key opinion leader in breast oncology both locally and regionally. Janice is the Founding Convenor of the Hong Kong Breast Oncology Group (HKBOG) which is a member of the “Breast International Group” (BIG), being the third Asian member after Japan and Taiwan. She is also appointed as Chair of the CTRG Audit Committee for the National Cancer Institute in 2017, and a member of the International Society of Geriatric Oncology (SIOG), the Publication Committee of the SIOG and also the co-track chair for translational research for the SIOG Annual Meeting in 2018. She is also the Founding Convenor of the Hong Kong Society of Geriatric Oncology (HKSGO) which is the official professional group member for Hong Kong SAR under SIOG. Janice was also the Co-Chair of the Organizing Committee of the 8th Global Chinese Breast Cancer Organizations Alliance Conference 2021 with Hong Kong as the hosting city. Janice also serves on the Scientific Committee for the “Metastatic Breast Cancer Track” for the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO) Annual Congress 2023 and the ESMO Breast 2024 Meeting Scientific Committee. On top breast cancer, geriatric oncology, and psycho-oncology, Women in Medicine is also one of her research areas as she serves as Deputy Chairman for the Women for Oncology Committee at the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO W4O), and the Founding Convenor of the Hong Kong Women for Oncology (HKW4O). With the challenge of COVID-19, she serves as member of the World Health Organization (WHO) Faith-Based Organizations Communities of Practice Research & Learning Committee and the Co-Convenor for the Anglican Health & Community Network (AHCN) appointed by the Anglican Consultative Council (ACC) and the Archbishop of Canterbury. Dr. Tsang is currently Member of the Specialty Board of Medical Oncology and used to be the Programme Director for Medical Oncology in the Hong Kong Island at the Hong Kong College of Physicians, a member of the Co-ordinating Committee (CoC) for Medical Oncology at the Hospital Authority, and the Deputy Chairperson for the Institutional Review Board for the Hong Kong West Cluster/ HKU (2012-2016), She was the Director of Cancer Centre at the Queen Mary Hospital (2015-2016). She has various appointments in different professional bodies such as the Honorary Advisor for various cancer self-help groups including the Hong Kong Christian Cancer Care Association, the Haven of Hope Holistic Care Centre etc. She serves as Executive Committee Member and Medical Advisor for the Hong Kong Cancer Fund, and the Education Committee Member for the Hong Kong Anti-Cancer Society etc. Furthermore, Janice is involved in various public services including serving on the Social Welfare Advisory Committee and the Rehabilitation Advisory Committee at the HKSAR Government. She is the Founding Vice President of the Hong Kong Women Doctors Association (HKWDA), now the Hon. Councilor of the HKWDA, the Immediate Past Warden of the Starr Hall at The University of Hong Kong, and the Vice President of the Hong Kong Women Professionals & Entrepreneurs Association. Furthermore, Janice is an alumnus of the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Ming Hua Theology College and has completed her Clinical Pastoral Education Training in 2018 and 2019, further studied the DMin programme at The Graduate Institute of the College of Pastoral Supervision & Psychotherapy (CPSP) with the Dean, Professor Raymond Lawrence with particular research interests in psycho-oncology, breast cancer patients and geriatric oncology patients and families. She is also trained in qualitative analyses with Emeritus Professor Cecilia Chan and Professor Siu-Man Ng at the Department of Social Work & Social Administration, Faculty of Social Sciences, The University of Hong Kong.
