SIOG and Elsevier are seeking a new Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Geriatric Oncology (JGO), SIOG’s official journal since 2010.

About the journal
JGO is an international, multidisciplinary peer-reviewed journal covering the pathogenesis, biology, treatment, and survivorship of older adults with cancer. It publishes original research, reviews, clinical trials, treatment guidelines, short communications, perspectives, meeting reports, and letters to the editor, spanning basic and translational science through to clinical research, education, and health policy. Its current impact factor is 2.9.
What the Editor-in-Chief does
The Editor-in-Chief sets the journal’s scientific direction and is its principal representative to the international geriatric oncology community.
The role covers editorial leadership: overseeing peer review, deciding on acceptances, desk rejections and appeals, recruiting and mentoring an internationally representative editorial board, and commissioning reviews, commentaries, and special issues on emerging topics.
It also covers the journal’s growth. The Editor-in-Chief develops strategies to extend JGO’s reach and impact factor, expands content categories including clinical trial reports and SIOG-endorsed guidelines, and attracts submissions from research groups worldwide.
Working with SIOG is central to the role. The Editor-in-Chief sits on SIOG’s Publication Committee, serves ex officio on relevant governance committees, collaborates with the Methods Working Group on society-endorsed guidelines and position statements, and represents JGO at the SIOG Annual Conference and at meetings including ASCO, ESMO, and AGS. The role also includes hosting a journal workshop at the Annual Conference and promoting the Arti Hurria Award.
Alongside this, the Editor-in-Chief maintains the partnership with Elsevier’s editorial office and advises on digital publishing strategy, including social media, author interviews, and paper of the month initiatives.
Who should apply
Candidates should hold an MD, PhD, or equivalent doctoral degree with recognised expertise in geriatric oncology, medical oncology, geriatric medicine, or a closely related discipline. Active SIOG membership and demonstrated engagement with SIOG are required.
Applicants should have established international standing, a strong publication and citation record, and prior editorial experience as an associate editor, editorial board member, or section editor of a peer-reviewed biomedical journal. Excellent written and spoken English is essential, as English is the language of publication.
Experience as an Editor-in-Chief or Deputy Editor, participation in SIOG Working Groups or Tumour Task Forces, familiarity with Editorial Manager, and a record of supporting early-career researchers are all advantages.
Term, time, and institutional support
The appointment is for an initial three-year term and requires approximately 8 to 10 hours a week, plus attendance at the SIOG Annual Conference. An honorarium is attached to the role and is discussed during the application process.
The Editor-in-Chief hosts the journal’s editorial office at their own institution. Identifying or hiring a staff member to run it is a condition of the role, with an estimated 10 to 16 hours of staff time per week. Candidates should confirm institutional support before applying.
