INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR – THE ECOOL STUDY

2023-10-16T12:20:46+02:00

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE AUTHORS:  Angela Macias Valle PhD student in Physical Activity and Sport Sciences, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Spain.   Colm Mac Eochagain Fellow in Geriatric Oncology St James’ Hospital, Dublin, Ireland   BACKGROUND Surgery and treatment for colorectal cancer (CRC) in the elderly patient increases the risk of developing post-operative complications, loss of functional independence, and worsening health-related quality of life (HRQoL). There is a lack of high-quality randomized controlled trials evaluating the potential benefit of exercise as a countermeasure. The primary aim of the ongoing ECOOL study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a home-based multicomponent exercise program for improving HRQoL and functional capacity in older adults undergoing CRC surgery and treatment. We spoke with the principal author of this important study, to discuss the study's design, objectives, and the implications it might have for the treatment of colorectal cancer in the elderly population. QUESTIONS: What [...]

Handbook of Cancer in the Senior Patient (ESMO/SIOG) - updated version The European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) and the International Society for Geriatric Oncology (SIOG) developed this handbook in 2010, which was initiated by Dirk Schrijvers, Branko Zakotnik, Riccardo Audisio, Hendrik van Halteren, Arti Hurria, and the undersigned. This handbook is not only for Europeans. Cancer is a disease related to ageing, and the proportion of senior patients increases worldwide. While the proportion of persons beyond age 70 is still small in developing countries, their numerous population means that there are more “elderlies” in India than in Europe. Download the table of contents Download the first chapter In 2015, the decision was made to start updating this content so as to bring you the latest developments on this important topic. While the original PDF is still available for download, please [...]

Geriatric Oncology Educational Centers

2023-04-11T14:58:07+02:00

With the increasing awareness of the relevance of geriatric oncology, there are increasing training and research opportunities worldwide. However, most of these are not well advertised and there is no centralized location where interested trainees can easily find this information. SIOG has collected and published a comprehensive database of training and research opportunities in geriatric oncology available worldwide. This project has been supported by the Young SIOG interest group. SIOG acknowledges the following SIOG members for extensive contribution to the project. Nicolò Matteo Luca Battisti (UK/IT), Silvio Monfardini (IT), Nienke de Glas (NL), Ron Maggiore (US), Capucine Baldini (FR), Manuel Rodrigues (FR), Tina Hsu (CND) and Kah Poh Loh (US). NB: SIOG performs regular updates of this database. We do however rely on the support from the geriatric oncology community to provide us with updates regarding any new training or research program or any new developments on [...]
