Marije Hamaker

Marije Hamaker is clinical geriatrician working at the Diakonessenhuis in Utrecht, the Netherlands since 2010, where she completed her PhD on “Decision making in geriatric oncology” in 2012. Subsequently, she has developed a geriatric oncology clinic and successful geriatric oncology research program, mentoring multiple PhD students. Additionally, she set up a large multicentre project regarding geriatric nephrology in 2014.

Her research has focussed on optimizing treatment decisions and patient-centred outcome measures through geriatric assessment. With over 90 Pubmed publications, she has been an advocate for the importance of investing time in understanding the patient’s health status and preferences prior to making treatment decisions, emphasizing that although perhaps time-consuming, this time is well-spent.   

She is an active member of the Dutch Geriatric Oncology Foundation and the International Society of Geriatric Oncology, and a faculty member of the yearly SIOG advanced course in Treviso.
