Harm Rutten (NL)

Harm Rutten works as a surgeon-oncologist at the Catharina Hospital in Eindhoven, which is a referral center for locally advanced and locally recurrent rectal cancer. Furthermore, he takes a special interest in the treatment of elderly colorectal cancer patients.

In 1990 he wrote his PhD study on the intersphincteric approach of rectal pathology. After his residency he became a fellow at the Daniël den Hoed Cancer Center in Rotterdam, and after that he continued his carreer at the Catharina Hospital. In the Catharina Hospital facilities for Intraoperative Radiotherapy have been developed, which explains the special interest for complex pelvic malignancies. As a board member of the International Society of Intraoperative Radiotherapy much effort was put in the exploration of the possibilities of intraoperative radiotherapy.

He is involved in guideline development for colorectal cancer patients with a special interest in optimizing guidelines for elderly

Since 2013 he was appointed professor on surgical oncology at the Maastricht University Medical Center

Furthermore, Dr Rutten is associate editor of the European Journal of Surgical Oncology
