Jan. 25, 2018 - SIOG & MASCC formalize their close relationship in a MoU

In January 2018, SIOG and the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer  (MASCC) formalized their close relationship in a Memorandum of Understanding. MASCC is an international multidisciplinary organization dedicated to research and education in all aspects of supportive care for people with cancer regardless of the stage of their disease. Founded in 1990, MASCC now includes members from more than 70 countries on 6 continents.

The purpose of this MOU is to increase collaboration, mutual recognition, and shared, culturally sensitive approaches to the work of both organizations. Both SIOG and MASCC are committed to international collaboration. The MOU recognizes a mutual intention to support one another in developing partnerships and to work together toward shared educational, research, and clinical goals. Both organizations have agreed to promote supportive care in older cancer patients, foster membership in both organizations, support one another’s activities, and pursue joint programs and projects.

MASCC Executive Director Melissa Chin notes that, “Through this association, our two organizations can better leverage synergies and seize new opportunities to create and deploy education and research solutions internationally. We are excited at the possibilities this formal MOU brings to further supportive care in cancer throughout the world to make excellent cancer care possible.

SIOG President Stuart Lichtman, MD, FACP, adds that he’s very pleased about this new understanding between our organizations, adding that, “This relationship will capitalize on a natural synergy. It will be a productive interaction of MASCC, which has improved the lives of cancer patients by educating oncologists on appropriate symptom management and supportive care, and SIOG, which has become the leader in geriatric oncology through education, stimulating research, and mentoring young investigators. This relationship will further enhance the missions of both organizations. I am looking forward to our joint endeavors."
